LIVING AND PROCLAIMING THE GOSPEL: with Godly Passion and Confidence (Romans 1:1-17 ● Message #3/9) 03-14-10
INTRODUCTION (adapted from The Epistle to the Romans, by Douglas J. Moo): 1. Rome & the NT Church (50’s A.D.): ● The Greco-Roman World: a Greek influenced culture of the Roman Empire. Jews/Christians were scattered throughout, but were minority groups living in a pagan world. ● The Church in Rome: probably started by Roman Jews converted at Pentecost (Acts 2), who brought the gospel back to Rome. Gentile presence within the church was increasing as the gospel spread. The Jews were temporarily expelled from Rome (A.D. 49-54), so the church in Rome become largely & quickly Gentile in membership (and was probably made up of numerous house churches – see Ro 16:1ff). By the time Paul writes Romans, the Jews had returned, but relationships between Jewish & Gentile Christians were strained (with Gentile indifference-arrogance towards Jews; and the Jews’ reliance/overemphasis on the OT law in their NT faith). ● Our Church & World Today. 2. Paul’s letter to the Romans: ● Paul as a Missionary: Paul’s on his 3rd missionary journey, probably writing while in Corinth (A.D. 57), with plans to visit Jerusalem, Rome, & then begin a mission work in Spain (Ro 15:22-29). ● Some Theological Highlights: The continuity/faithfulness of God’s salvific plan from the OT thru the NT (& how Israel/Gentiles, law/grace fit in); The problem of sin; Justification by faith thru Christ; Life in Christ & holy living; The believer’s security amidst trials & death; and Unity in the church). ● The Overarching theme of Romans: “the Gospel” (Ro 1:16-17). KNOWING THE GOSPEL (Points #2 thru 6 adapted from a message by D.A. Carson on 1Cor 15:1ff). 1. This is God’s Gospel: grounded in God’s Promise and Faithfulness (vs1-2). 2. The Gospel is Prophetic and Biblical: grounded in the Holy Scriptures (vs1-2). 3. The Gospel is Christ-centered: and Eschatological in Nature (vs3-5). 4. The Gospel is Historical: and Apostolic in Nature (vs1,3-5). 5. The Gospel is Life-transforming: and Cross-culturally Relevant (vs5, 14-15). 6. The Gospel is Theological: and Personally Relevant (vs6-7, 16-17). 7. The Gospel is Missional: and Experienced in Unifying Fellowship (vs8-17). LIVING & PROCLAIMING THE GOSPEL. 1. Do we know the Living Christ? 2. Do we have a Godly Passion & Confidence in the Gospel? ● thru Biblical Faith & Understanding: Knowing God and His Gospel; ● thru Discipleship & Encouragement: Living in the fellowship of the church, as Christ’s servants and for His glory; ● by Trusting in God’s Power: Unashamed of the Gospel and sharing Christ with unbelievers.

The Gospel according to John (today’s passage in context) ● Author: the Apostle John (known as the beloved disciple: Jn 21:20); probably writing from Ephesus (Turkey); in the 60’s to 90’s A.D. ● Recipients: probably Greek-influenced Jews and God-fearing Gentiles familiar with OT Scriptures (but not believers in Christ) ● Themes: Jesus as the Son of God; Various topics such as life, light, darkness, night, witness, true, truth, the world, glory, and belief. Quote: “…the Son of God was sent into the world to become the Jesus of history, so that the glory and grace of God might be uniquely and perfectly disclosed [made known]” – D.A. Carson (The Gospel According to John, The Pillar New Testament Commentary). ● An Evangelistic Purpose for Writing: “but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” John 20:31 (ESV). RADICAL DISCIPLESHIP PRODUCES CUTTING-EDGE EVANGELISM (Matthew 9:9-13 ● Discipleship/Evangelism: Message #1/9) 02-28-10
INTRODUCTION. 1. Some Key Terms for our new Sermon Series: ● Topic (Discipleship & Evangelism): "Discipleship" - following Jesus by faith in obedience to God’s word, in the power of the Holy Spirit, and thru the fellowship of the Church (a disciple is a learner, follower). "Evangelism" - "Evangel" means “the gospel or good news” (Mk 1:1; Rom 1:1; 1Co 15:1); from the Greek word euangelion (good news). "Evangelist" means “messenger/preacher of the gospel” (Eph 4:11). "Angel" means “messenger” in Greek (Lk 2:9-10) (hence "ev 'angel' ist"). "Evangelism" means “proclaiming or preaching the gospel” (Mt 11:5; 1Co 15:1). "Evangelical" means “characterized by the gospel” (the evangel). ● Theme (Engaging the Culture and Preaching the Cross): "Engaging the Culture" (see 1Cor 9:19ff) - Becoming all things to all people through all means for the purpose of leading sinners to saving faith in Christ. "Preaching the Cross" (see Rom 1:16ff; 1Co 1:18 – 2:5) - Proclaiming the gospel as God’s power to save & transform sinners thru the cross (and His choosing the lowly of the world). The message of the cross is offensive to a spiritually blind and rebellious world (the cross is a stumbling block and foolishness to those who refuse to believe, due to its intrinsic humility, weakness, shame, surrender, suffering and death). 2. Today’s Scripture in Context (Matthew 9:9-13): ● “The Gospel according to Matthew” – written by the Apostle (and Evangelist) Matthew probably in the 50’s – 60’s A.D.; possibly to the church in Antioch (Jewish-Gentile membership). Matthew (Levi) was a Jewish tax collector in Israel, who left everything to follow Jesus. ● Mth 1 – 4: Introduction to Jesus Christ and the Gospel; ● Mth 5 – 7: Discipleship/Kingdom living defined (Sermon on the Mount); ● Mth 8 – 9: the Kingdom is Expanding: → thru the Messiah’s Authority & Power (showing Jesus as the Messiah); → thru Jesus’ Healing & Compassion (for the social outcasts); → thru the Cost/Call of Discipleship (disappointing & unexpected). ● Mth 10: Missionary Mandates (for the Apostles; to Israel/the World). THE RADICAL CALL OF DISCIPLESHIP. 1st, is Unexpected & Life-transforming (v9); 2nd, is for Social Outcasts: and it is Experienced thru Jesus’ Compassion (v10); 3rd, is Offensive to the Rebellious: but Good News for helpless Sinners (vs11-13). CUTTING-EDGE EVANGELISM 1st, Rises out of Radical Discipleship: in which we Follow Jesus wholeheartedly as a way of life; 2nd, is Lived out Incarnationally [Christ became one of us & lived among us (loving us sinners) – Let us follow in His example]: ● as we Meet People on their Turf; ● as we Love and Reach out to Social Outcasts; ● as we Open up our Homes to the Lost; ● as we Introduce People to Jesus Christ; ● as we Share the Gospel with Sinners.

WALKING IN THE TRUTH AND LOVING ONE ANOTHER (2 John * Message #13/14) 02-07-10
INTRODUCTION: (The Letters of John). 1. BACKGROUND: most likely written in the 70’s to 90’s A.D., by the apostle John, to believers living in Asia minor (modern day Turkey). It is reported that John began to minister in and around Ephesus, after leaving Jerusalem (before its fall to Rome in 67 to 70 A.D.). This same John wrote The Gospel according to John and probably Revelation. The church/churches addressed in 1-3 John are possibly connected to or similar to the 7 churches listed in Revelation 2 & 3. 2. A BRIEF SUMMARY: ● 1 John: probably written to one church, yet intended to be read by multiple congregations who had been ministered to by John. ● 2 John: written to and for one church (possibly the church which initially received the letter of 1 John). ● 3 John: written to one person, an individual named Gaius (possibly in the church which received the letter of 2 John). It is possible, but uncertain, that all 3 letters were written and sent together by John, and delivered by a man named Demetrius (see 3rd John v12). ● Some Dominant Themes: God’s revelation in Christ, fellowship, joy, walking in the truth, loving one another, guarding against false teachings, and assurance of eternal life. JOHN’S PASTORAL HEART. 1. Expressing Godly Love (vs1-3): pastorally, in the church, and thru Christ’s abiding truth. 2. Requesting Godly Love (vs4-6): that we love one another by obeying God’s commands. 3. Exhorting fellow Believers (vs7-13): ● to recognize demonic deception (v7); ● to watch ourselves and win a full reward (v8); ● to abide in the teaching of Christ (v9); ● to take a stand against false teachings, amidst faithful hospitality (vs10-11); ● thru a Christ-centered fellowship that makes our joy complete (vs12-13). SUMMARY: WALKING IN THE TRUTH AND LOVING ONE ANOTHER. 1. with a Christ-centered Faith & Life; 2. thru the fellowship of the Church; 3. by Standing against False Teachings (which is one way we love each other biblically).

OUR ASSURANCE OF ETERNAL LIFE: EXPERIENCED IN DAILY LIFE (1 John 5:13-21 * Message #12/14) 01-24-10
Introduction *The notes in this introduction rely heavily upon the following two sources: The Epistles of John by I. Howard Marshall, and 1-3 John by Robert W. Yarbrough. 1. John’s Purpose for Writing (reminder: he is writing to believers) ● that we would have a Christ-centered, Joy-filled Fellowship with God & each other (1Jn 1:1-4). ● that we may not sin, yet know we are forgiven when we do sin: thru confession & thru Christ (1Jn 1:5-2:2). ● that we may know we have eternal life (1Jn 5:13). ● all three of these purposes are themes found in 1Jn 2:12-14. 2. Three-fold Assurance of Eternal Life (found throughout 1st John) ● Doctrinal: Belief in Jesus as the Christ & the Son of God. ● Ethical: Obeying God’s commands. ● Relational: Loving God & loving one another. 3. Experiencing Assurance of Eternal Life (in 1Jn 5:13-21) ● thru Godly confidence in prayer. ● thru God’s power & protection in our daily lives. OUR ASSURANCE OF ETERNAL LIFE... 1. is based on our Faith in Jesus Christ (v13) 2. is Experienced thru Godly Confidence in Prayer (vs14-17) ● God Hears us and grants our Requests (vs14-15) ● God grows us in Christ thru our Intercessory prayers for each other (vs16-17) 3. is Experienced as God’s children: (vs18-19) thru His Power and His Protection 4. is Given to us thru the Revelation of Jesus Christ (vs20-21).
OVERCOMING THE LOVELESSNESS OF THE WORLD AND LIVING WITH THE ASSURANCE OF ETERNAL LIFE (1Jn 5:1-13 * Message 11/14) 01-17-10
Review of 1 John 4:13-21 ● True love is Gospel-Centered: To say that the Gospel is about love is true, but incomplete. John addresses this issue in the reverse order. Love is defined, revealed, and experienced thru the Gospel, which itself is God-centered (revealing and proclaiming God’s being, God’s character, and God’s actions). ● Perfect love casts out fear: We fear the Lord in godly living, but as God’s children we do not fear the final judgment. Therefore, as God’s love transforms us and because we do not fear judgment, we are empowered and set free to love one another, which we will do if we truly believe. THE POWER IN OUR CHRIST-CENTERED FAITH 1. We live Victoriously in this Life (vs1-5) ● thru Faith in Jesus: He is the Christ and the Son of God (vs1&5) ● thru Spiritual Birth: which empowers us to Love God & others and to obey His commandments (vs1-3) ● by Overcoming the World: thru Spiritual Birth & Faith in Jesus. (vs4-5) 2. Summary Highlights of vs1-5: ● The God-centeredness of Love (1 John 4:7 – 5:5) We love ← (because) we are born of God and we know God: 1Jn 4:7 Some people do not love ← they do not know God: 1Jn 4:8 We know love ← God sent His Son and loved us: 1Jn 4:9-10 We love ← God abides in us/His love is perfected in us: 1Jn 4:11-13 We confess Jesus as Son of God ← God abides in us/we in Him: 1Jn 4:14f We love ← we abide in God & He first loved us: 1Jn 4:16-19 Some people hate ← they do not love God: 1Jn 4:20 We believe in Jesus as the Christ ← we are born of God: 1Jn 5:1 We love each other ← we love the Father/obey His commands: 1Jn 5:1-3 We overcome the world ← we are born of God: 1Jn 5:4 We overcome world ← we believe Jesus is the Son of God: 1Jn 5:5 ● We overcome the Lovelessness of the World thru Christ’s Victory. THE THEOLOGY OF CHRIST-CENTERED FAITH 1. We know the Truth about God (vs6-13) ● Jesus Christ is the God-Man who died on the Cross (vs6-8). ● God reveals Himself in the Person of Jesus Christ and by the Spirit (vs9-10). ● God’s Testimony assures us of our Eternal Life (vs11-13). 2. Summary Highlights of vs6-13: ● Be well-versed in Gospel-centered Christology. ● Live with the assurance of eternal life thru fellowship with Christ.

ABIDING AS THE CHILDREN OF GOD: with Eschatological Hope in Christ and thru His Victory over Sin and the Devil (1 John 2:27-3:10 * Message #6/14) 12-06-09
Sermon notes in outline form (which are easier to read) are made available upon request thru email to Pastor Marcus Johnson at: efcamarcus@sbcglobal.net. INTRODUCTION: JOHN’S TEACHING ABOUT SIN & THE CHRISTIAN LIFE. A. SUMMARY: God is light, in Him there is no darkness, and His spirit and His word abide in believers, who have fellowship and eternal life with Him thru Jesus Christ (1Jn 1:5ff; 2:27; 4:13ff; 5:20). Therefore, true believers cannot continue in sin (1:6ff; 3:3-10). Yet, Christ is our advocate and forgives us when we do sin and confess our sins (1:8-2:2; 5:16-17). However, Christ’s victory over sin, the world and the devil means we no longer live in bondage to these powers, for His anointing abides in us, revealing “gospel” truth to us, guarding us from being deceived, and making us strong-overcomers who love one another (2:12-27; 3:5-8,16ff; 4:4; 5:20). Nevertheless, we must guard against the temptations of sin, the deception of false teachers, and in thinking we are sinless as Christians (1:8; 2:15-17; 5:16-20). B. EMBRACING THE “IDEAL” CHRISTIAN LIFE WITH HUMILITY: John emphasizes both the obedient (sin-free) ideal Christian life expected of us, as well as the on-going need to acknowledge our sin and turn to our advocate: Jesus Christ. Two sides of the Same Coin (two examples): 1st, if we claim to be without sin we deceive ourselves, however, if we keep on sinning we have not been born of God (1:7; 3:4-10). 2nd, No one who abides in Christ keeps on sinning (3:6,9; 5:17-18), but if we do sin, we have an advocate: Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, who takes away our sin (2:1-2; 3:4). I. ABIDING AS THE CHILDREN OF GOD: WITH ESCHATOLOGICAL HOPE IN CHRIST. A. WE ABIDE WITH CONFIDENCE: in the Gospel and at the 2nd Coming (vs27-29). [This is an Eschatological Perspective: John has in view “who we will be” when Christ returns, yet he sees this as a transformation that is already taking place, as this purifying hope of seeing Christ and becoming like Him purifies us from sin in the present (2:27-3:3; 5:4,18). This is the already but not yet perspective: God’s love is already perfected in us as we obey Him and love one another (2:5; 4:12; 5:1-5), but we will not yet be fully like Jesus (conformed into His likeness) until He appears (2:27)]. B. WE MARVEL AT THE FATHER’S LOVE: as His beloved children in this world (v1). C. WE PURIFY OURSELVES: knowing that we will see Christ and be like Him (vs2-3). II. ABIDING AS THE CHILDREN OF GOD: THRU HIS VICTORY OVER SIN AND THE DEVIL. A. CHRIST HAS TAKEN AWAY OUR SIN: therefore we do not keep on sinning (vs4-7). [Examples/Definitions of Sin in 1st John: walking in darkness and claiming to be without sin (1:6-10), disobeying God’s word (2:3-6); not loving one another (2:9-11; 3:16ff); loving the world (2:15-17); false teachings and not believing in Jesus Christ (2:18-27; 4:1-6; 5:10-12); and lawlessness (3:4-9)]. B. CHRIST HAS CONQUERED THE DEVIL: therefore we do not practice sin (v8). C. GOD’S SEED ABIDES IN US: therefore we practice righteousness! (vs9-10).
THE IMPERATIVE OF SHARING THE GOSPEL (Romans 10:14-15 * by Pastor Sid Miller) 11-22-09

I. WHY WE ARE TO SHARE THE GOSPEL - A. Unbelievers will spend eternity in hell (Luke 16:19-23; Mark 9:43-49; Revelation 20:11-15; Romans 9:2-3). B. God's word commands us to share the gospel and make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20; Psalm 107:2; 2 Timothy 4:5). II. TOOLS FOR SHARING THE GOSPEL - A. God's word produces saving faith (Romans 10:14, 10:17). B. Your personal testimony can help produce a desire for salvation. III. ENCOURAGEMENT FOR SHARING THE GOSPEL - A. God's word will accomplish God's purpose (Isaiah 55:10-11). B. God desires the salvation of unbelievers (1 Timothy 2:4; II Peter 3:9; Ezekiel 33:11). C. The gospel has the power to transform lives (Romans 1:16). PERSONAL APPLICATION (In order to be a doer or the word and not just a hearer I will do the following): --> I will go before God in prayer and ask Him to search my heart (Psalm 139:23-24); --> I will ask God to help me to be obedient in sharing the gospel with unbelievers; --> I will pray for those unbelievers that I know personally; --> I will ask God to give me wisdom and sensitivity when I am around unbelievers in order to effectively share the gospel with them.
GOSPEL CONFIDENCE IN DAILY LIFE FOR YOU AND ME (1Jn 2:18-28 * Message #5/14) 11-15-09
{NOTE: To receive these Sermon notes below via email, in an outline form (which is easier to understand), please email your request to Pastor Marcus Johnson: efcamarcus@sbcglobal.net}. INTRODUCTION: an Eschatological View of Time – “History has changed its direction, says Newman. It runs ‘not towards the end, but along it, and on the brink of it; and is at all times near the great event, which did it run towards it, it would at once run into. Christ then is ever at our doors.’ Since the coming of Jesus, history has a new urgency, a sense that its end is at hand and the powers of the future are impinging upon it. … Thus at any moment history could lapse over the line and bring about the end. And history’s proximity to the line (The End) will be signaled by the devastating events described here and elsewhere in the New Testament. (*Gary M. Burge, Letters of John, p.126-27). OUR VICTORY OVER SIN AND OUR CHRIST-CENTERED ASSURANCE IN LIFE (1 John 1:5-2:2 * Message #3/14) 10-18-09
NOTE: To receive these Sermon notes below in an outline form (which is easier to read), please email your request to Pastor Marcus Johnson (efcamarcus@sbcglobal.net). INTRODUCTION: SOME KEY DEFINITIONS – The Definitions below are taken from: {1} “Pocket Dictionary of Theological Terms” by Grenz, Guretzki & Nordling; {2} “Systematic Theology” by Wayne Grudem; and {3} “1-3 John” by Robert W. Yarbrough. SIN: “The fundamental unbelief, distrust and rejection of God and human displacement of God as the center of reality. The Bible presents sin as both fallen humanity’s state of separation and alienation from God and as a person’s purposeful disobedience to God’s will as evidence in concrete thought or act. As an inherent part of the human condition sin is universal, and it is both corporate and individual.” {1}. ATONEMENT (atone means “to make amends”): what God has done thru the life and death of Jesus Christ to remedy the human problem of sin {1}, leading to the salvation of His people. It includes two key concepts: propitiation (“a sacrifice that bears God’s wrath to the end and in so doing changes God’s wrath toward us into favor” {2}); and expiation (the covering of sins and the cancelling of debts {1}). ADVOCATE: translated from the Greek word paraklētos (par-ak'-lay-tos) which means helper, or intercessor. (Other definitions: a righteous intercessor; a legal assistant who intercedes; an advocate who assists a sinner seeking forgiveness; a mediator who assists a sinner seeking remission of penalty at the temple; an advocate who gains a hearing for you {3}). The NIV translates this word as “one who speaks to the father in our defense.” RIGHTEOUS: As a noun, it means one who stands in a right relationship with God and whose life is in line with the will and nature of God. “Righteousness” is the doctrine that “God always acts in accordance with what is right and that he himself is the final standard of what is right” {2}. In 1st John 2:1, Jesus is called “the righteous.” The NIV translates this as “the righteous one” and the NLT replaces the word “righteous” with this phrase: “the one who pleases God completely.” PROPITIATION: (see definition above under “Atonement”) translated from the Greek word hilasmos (hil-as-mos') which means “an atoning sacrifice” (NIV/NRSV). This word is translated “propitiation” in the ESV/NASB, as “expiation” in the RSV, and as “the sacrifice that takes away” in the NLT. SUMMARY: “While Jesus’s death certainly has the effect of expiating sin (wiping away its penalty), it is difficult to avoid the impression that it also propitiates (turns away the wrath of) God’s promised punishment of sin and sinners whose transgressions are not atoned for on the last day–a day of condemnation spoken of by Jesus in John 12:48” {3}. LIVE IN VICTORY OVER SIN – 1st, By Knowing God and Walking in the Light: v1 (see 1Jn 1:5-10) [John’s Purpose: I write these things that that you may not sin]. 2nd, Thru Jesus Christ our Advocate: vs1-2 [The Righteous One/the Propitiation for Our Sins]. 3rd, By Seeking Holiness with Humility: vs1-2 [Live a holy life in Christ & Humbly seek His forgiveness daily]. LIVE WITH CHRIST-CENTERED ASSURANCE – 1st, Our Relationship with Christ: vs3-4 [We know that we know Christ if we keep His Commandments]. 2nd, Our Perfection in Christ: vs3-5 [We know God’s love is perfected in us if we keep His word] “Made complete” [perfected] means that the Christian’s love is entire and mature … To receive and obey God’s word is to be made perfect in love; the thought of pleasing and serving God is supreme in the Christian’s motives and molds his conduct … We must bear in minds two things: first, that perfection is not incompatible with further progress and development, and second, that John’s statement here must be place (paradoxically) alongside his earlier assertion that it is wrong for us to say “we are without sin.” (The Epistles of John, by I. Howard Marshall). 3rd, Our Life in Christ: vs5-6 [We know we are in Christ if we walk like Jesus did].

LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST: THRU OUR FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST (1 John 1:1-4 * Message #1/14) 10-04-09
NOTE: To receive these Sermon notes below in an outline form (which is easier to read), please email your request to Pastor Marcus Johnson (efcamarcus@sbcglobal.net). INTRODUCTION TO 1ST JOHN (& the Letters of John): 1) AUTHOR: THE APOSTLE JOHN (who wrote the Gospel of John, 2nd & 3rd John, & Revelation). Early church sources acknowledge John’s authorship, as does internal testimony (comparing 1st John to the Gospel of John, etc). 2) DATE AND RECIPIENTS: A.D. 70-90?; --> To a Congregation near Ephesus? (northwest of Israel); --> A Church suffering Turmoil within (This congregation is possibly approaching its last hour: Some within the congregation were undermining John’s theology (i.e. his Gospel), living in sin & spiritual pride, not loving each other, and there was a group that had already left the church). 3) PURPOSE FOR WRITING: FOR FELLOWSHIP & JOY (that the believers would walk in Christ-centered fellowship and the joy that comes with it). At the same time, John is responding to the various problems listed above. --> Fellowship: “John did not want a church that was orthodox [believing right] but unloving, any more than he wanted a church that misrepresented Jesus Christ. He wanted both –sound doctrine and vibrant community – and he refused to settle for less.” (Gary M. Burge, "Letters of John"). --> Joy: “He has the heart of a pastor which cannot be completely happy so long as some of those for whom he feels responsible are not experiencing the full blessings of the gospel” (I. Howard Marshall, "The Epistles of John"). 4) MAJOR THEMES IN JOHN’S LETTERS (see the Theme at the top of the page): --> Knowing God thru the Person of Christ (God is light and God is love); --> Experiencing the Joy-filled Fellowship of Christ (with the Father, the Son, and each other); --> Living in the Victory of Christ (Overcoming sin, the world, and the devil); --> Abiding by Faith in Christ (by Practicing righteousness, Loving each other, Turning from sin, thru the Testimony of the Spirit, by Believing Jesus is God's Son); --> Loving One Another in Christ (as God has loved us, by sharing what we have and by laying down our lives for each other); --> Walking in the Truth of Christ (by Knowing Jesus Christ, thru the Teaching of the Holy Spirit, thru Obedience to God's Word, by Standing against false teachers, and by Supporting ministers of the Gospel). KNOWING GOD REVEALED THRU THE PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST (vs1-2). --> Believe in Jesus Christ: (as the Word of Life/the Eternal Life); --> Believe in the Incarnation: (God the Son becomes a Man); --> Believe in the historical Jesus: (this is Foundational to our Christian Faith); --> Believe in the Apostolic Witness: (recognize the Importance of Eye-witness Testimony). TAKING JOHN’S WORD TO HEART (vs3-4) John’s Gospel-driven Purpose: --> Living Christ-centered Fellowship; --> John’s Pastoral-driven Goal: Experiencing Christ-centered Joy.
FEARING THE LORD AND BELIEVING GOD'S PROMISE (Malachi 3:13-4:6 * Message #6/6) 09-27-09
INTRODUCTION TO TODAY’S MESSAGE --> RELEVANCE TO OUR DAILY LIVES: 1st, Taking to heart God’s coming judgment; 2nd, Understanding God’s promises; and 3rd, Finding comfort and hope in the trials of daily life by encouraging one another with God's promise of the coming eternal glory. -->THE SIX DISPUTATIONS IN MALACHI (in chiasmic form) A. GOD’S LOVE & ISRAEL’S EXPERIENCE: (1:1-5) Israel is rebuked for doubting God’s love. In spite of her unfaithfulness, the LORD still loved Israel, but she was not experiencing His love because she was living sinfully and focused on her troubled circumstances, rather than knowing the LORD and living godly lives. B. GOD’S NAME & ISRAEL’S BEGRUDGING OFFERINGS: (1:6-2:9) the ungodly priests are rebuked for allowing Israel to give half-hearted offerings which dishonored the LORD’s Name among the other nations (the exact opposite of Israel’s purpose for being His people: being a light for the Gentiles). C. GOD’S FAVOR & ISRAEL’S UNGODLY MARRIAGES: (2:10-16) the LORD was withholding His favor from Israel because she was unfaithful in her covenantal relationship with her God (allowing her men to marry women outside of the Jewish faith & divorcing their Jewish wives in the process: which included treating them violently, shamefully, and with neglect). C’ GOD’S JUSTICE & ISRAEL’S UNGODLY LIVING: (2:17-3:5) Israel is rebuked for questioning God’s justice (based on her troubled circumstances), when in reality it was she who was living unjustly (embracing sorcery, committing adultery, and oppressing the needy). But God will purify His people who repent and bring judgment on those who do not (thru the coming of Christ). B’ GOD’S FAITHFULNESS & ISRAEL’S BEGRUDGING OFFERINGS: (3:6-12) This time all of Israel is rebuked for giving half-heartedly in offerings to God, and she is admonished to return to the LORD in whole-hearted worship & offerings. Those who do will find God to be faithful in His unchanging character. A’ GOD’S PROMISE & ISRAEL’S EXPERIENCE: (3:13-4:6) Israel is warned about the coming judgment amidst her blasphemous charge that God blesses those who do evil. Those who fear & serve the LORD are His “treasured possession” and will one day be exalted above those who do not. --> MESSAGE/DISPUTATION #6: The LORD’s elective love is disputed but will be vindicated (thru His Judgments and in the fulfillment of His Promise). FEARING THE LORD --> when other “Church People” & our world does Not (vs13-15); --> thru Fellowship with other “God-fearing Believers” (v16); --> as the “Treasured Possession” of the Living God (vs16-18). BELIEVING GOD’S PROMISE --> in Light of the “Coming Judgment” and “our Blessed Hope” (vs1-3); by Remembering “Covenantal Faithfulness” thru our Faith in Jesus Christ (v4); -->by Taking to Heart “the Prophetic Word” (vs 5-6 and all of Malachi).
LIVING A CHRIST-CENTERED LIFE AND EXPERIENCING GOD'S FAITHFULNESS (Malachi 3:6-12 * Message #5/6) 09-13-09
INTRODUCTION 1) Relevance to our Daily Lives: Experiencing God's faithfulness during troubled times thru a relationship with Jesus Christ (evidenced by sincere worship and generous giving by faith). 2) Message/Disputation #5: Israel’s begrudging Offerings are condemned as God’s Faithfulness is affirmed. GOD’S FAITHFULNESS TO HIS COVENANT 1) Knowing the LORD who is Faithful v6. 2) Understanding Covenantal Faithfulness vs6-7. 3) Returning to God thru Faithfulness in Offerings vs7-10. 4) Enjoying Covenantal Blessings vs10-12. LIVING A CHRIST-CENTERED LIFE 1) In General: --> Come to Jesus; --> Hear & Obey His Word; --> Rejoice & Pray. 2) Thru Faithful & Generous Offerings (“Principles of Tithing & NT Giving”): --> giving 10% of your Income; --> giving your First-fruits in Worship; --> giving by Faith with Cheerful Hearts; --> giving to and thru the Local Church (for Ministers & those in Need). 2) Experiencing God’s Faithfulness (principles taken from the Apostle Paul): --> Paul’s Strength in Christ amidst Suffering and Weakness; --> Paul’s Contentment in Christ amidst Modest Living; --> Paul’s Faith in Christ and Warning against the Love of Money; --> Paul’s Confidence in Christ when Facing Death.
LIVING RIGHTEOUSLY AND TRUSTING IN GOD'S JUSTICE (Malachi 2:17-3:5 * Message #4/6) 09-06-09
(Note: this Recording is somewhat distorted, but get’s better later in the Sermon * Sorry!) INTRODUCTION 1) Relevance to our Daily Lives: Why does a loving, all-powerful God allow so much suffering and evil in this world? What does it mean to live justly? 2) Review of Messages #1 thru #3: --> Experiencing God’s Love by knowing the LORD (1:1-5); --> Honoring God’s Name thru Christ-centered Leadership (1:6-2:9); --> Enjoying God’s Favor by Honoring the Marriage Covenant (2:10-16). 3) Message/Disputation #4: Israel questions God’s justice, while the LORD condemns Israel’s ungodliness (sorcery, adultery, social injustices). In the end, God will purify His people & judge sinners. BLASPHEMOUS-HYPOCRISY REBUKED 1) Where is the God of Justice? v17; 2) Behold the Coming Messenger v1; 3) Behold the Coming of the Lord vs1-5. HEEDING THE PROPHETIC WORD 1) Trusting in God’s Justice as Revealed in His Word: --> thru Submission to His Reign; --> thru Faith in His Character; --> thru Perseverance unto His Glory. 2) Living Righteously as the Church in this world: --> thru Faith in Jesus Christ; --> by Loving One Another; --> by Caring for those in Need.
HONORING THE MARRIAGE COVENANT AND ENJOYING GOD'S FAVOR (Malachi 2:10-16 * Message #3/6) 08-23-09
INTRODUCTION TO TODAY’S MESSAGE: 1) Relevance to our Daily Lives: Understanding God’s beautiful and protective plan for marriage; Taking to heart the consequences of marital sins and the connection between spiritual growth & healthy marriages; and Enjoying God’s favor by supporting/living out godly marriages and by seeking reconciliation after divorce. 2) The Six Disputations in Malachi (appearing in chiasmic form): Chiasm: a literary structure with reoccurring themes and a common center (often used in Scripture). For example, instead of 6 topics being arranged in an outline form as “ABCDEF”, a chiasm might consist of three topics that are each repeated, in this order “ABCCBA” (or a variation of this such as “ABBABBA”). In the outline below, notice God’s disputes with Israel concern 3 topics, each mentioned twice: (Israel’s Experience of God; Israel’s Offerings; & Israel’s ungodliness). --> A. God’s Love & Israel’s Experience (1:1-5): The LORD rebukes Israel for doubting His love, and says they will proclaim His greatness when He judges their enemies; --> B. God’s Name & Israel’s Offerings (1:6 - 2:9): The LORD rebukes the priests for accepting Israel’s half-hearted, begrudging offerings that dishonor God’s name; --> C. God’s Favor & Godly Marriages (2:10-16): The LORD rebukes Israel for those men who have married women outside of the Jewish faith and for divorcing their Jewish wives, and consequently God withholds His favor from them; --> C’. God’s Justice & Godly Living (2:17 - 3:5): The LORD rebukes Israel for her ungodly living (adultery & social injustices) while Israel questions God’s justice (as evil doers seem to go unpunished), but God will purify His people & judge sinners; --> B’. God’s Faithfulness & Israel’s Offerings (3:6-12): The LORD rebukes Israel for giving offerings half-heartedly, begrudgingly, and assures His people that they will experience His faithful provisions if they return wholeheartedly to God; --> A’. God’s Promise & Israel’s Experience (3:13 - 4:6): The LORD rebukes Israel’s blasphemous complaints against Him (that it is futile to serve God), and He assures the faithful remnant that they will experience His promise of the coming blessing, because they are His treasured possession. 3) Two Reoccurring Phrases in Malachi: --> “The LORD of hosts” - Israel’s personal God (Yahweh) reigns over all; --> “… but you say…” - refers to the disputes Israel has against her God. HONORING THE MARRIAGE COVENANT: --> In light of God and His Creation (v10); --> Thru Our Covenant with God (vs10-12); --> As a Covenant between a Man and a Woman (vs13-15) [including Companionship & Oneness]; --> By Multiplying Godly Offspring (v15). ENJOYING GOD’S FAVOR: --> By Guarding our Spirits against Compromise (vs15-16); --> By Confronting Domestic Violence & Overcoming It (vs15-16) [see: the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1.800.799.7233 Website: www.ndvh.org]; --> By Preserving Marriages and Finding Healing after Divorce (vs10-16).
EMBRACING CHRIST-CENTERED LEADERSHIP AND GLORIFYING GOD'S NAME IN THIS WORLD (Malachi 1:6-2:9 * Message #2) 08-16-09
INTRODUCTION TO TODAY’S MESSAGE: 1) Relevance to our Daily Lives: Recognizing the influence of role models and leaders; and Experiencing the purpose, joy, peace & security found in living for the honor and glory of God’s name (His reputation) in this world. 2) Review from Last Week: --> Malachi’s Message: a call to renewal for God’s people in their covenant with Him (covenant is a promised based relationship between two parties). Israel was suffering economically, politically, and spiritually due to their sins (half-hearted worship, ungodly leadership, divorce/adultery, & neglect of social justice). God’s promise of their glorious restoration as a kingdom had not been realized, yet the unbelieving peoples around them (including their enemies) appeared better off than they were. --> God as “the LORD of hosts”: The name “God” (the mighty one) is used only seven times in Malachi. God’s personal name “the LORD” (“Yahweh” which means “He is”) is used 46 times, and use of this name implies a personal relationship with God (see Exodus 3). With that, over 43% of the verses in Malachi contain some form of the phrase “the LORD of hosts” which implies that Israel’s personal God (the LORD) reigns over all the armies (hosts) in heaven and on earth. The prophet’s constant use of this name would reassure Israel of the LORD’s love & power to protect them. --> Six Disputations: Malachi raises six disputes that the LORD has with His people, using the reoccurring phrase “but you say…” followed by the people’s corresponding complaint against the LORD (“but you say” in Dispute #1 is found in Malachi 1:2; for #2 see 1:6,7,13; for #3 see 2:14; for #4 see 2:17; for #5 see 3:7,8; and for #6 see 3:13). In the 1st Disputation, God rebuked His people for questioning His love for them, and said they would see and declare His greatness after He judged their enemies. 3) Disputation #2: God rebukes Israel’s begrudging offerings, confronting the priests for their ungodly leadership which was allowing and promoting this (in Disputation #5, Malachi confronts the people themselves). Priests: in the Old Testament, God chose the Levites (the tribe of Levi, one of Jacob’s 12 sons) to lead God’s people in worship, as representatives of the firstborn from every Israelite family. Within the Levites, God consecrated Aaron and his descendants to be priests (ones who mediated between the LORD and His people, and instructed Israel in godly living). HALF-HEARTED/POLLUTED WORSHIP. 1) The LORD Confronts the Priests: --> Honor God in Worship (Mal 1:6-10); --> Glorify God in this World (Mal 1:11-14). 2) The LORD Rebukes the Priests: --> Take to Heart God’s Honor (Mal 2:13); --> Walk in Covenant with God (Mal 2:4-9). WHOLE-HEARTED/HOLY WORSHIP. 1) Embracing Christ-Centered Leadership: --> What does this look like?; --> How is this lived out? 2) Glorifying God’s Name in this World: --> as “the Priesthood of all Believers”; --> with the Joy and Peace of Jesus Christ.
KNOWING THE LORD AND EXPERIENCING GOD'S LOVE (Malachi 1:1-5 * Message #1/6) 08-09-09
INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF MALACHI. --> Author: the prophet Malachi (his name means “my Messenger”); --> Written to Israel (God’s People): around 434 B.C.? (date is uncertain); --> The LORD of Hosts: (or a variation of this) is found in 43% of the verses. “The LORD” is the personal name for God (“Yahweh” in Hebrew, meaning “He is” which is the third person form of “I am”). God revealed His name to Moses in Exodus 3. “Hosts” refers to the armies of heaven and earth. This phrase implies God’s sovereign reign over all the armies that exists; --> Covenant: God’s promised-based relationship with Israel (His people); --> Overall Theme and Message: a call for Israel to renew her fellowship with the LORD (as His chosen people, who are His treasured possession). Their sins included spiritual apathy in worship, ungodly leadership, unfaithfulness in marriage, and negligence regarding social justice; --> Six Disputations: Malachi raises six disputes the LORD has with His people. INTRODUCTION TO TODAY’S MESSAGE: --> Relevance to Our Lives: for Understanding & Experiencing God’s Love; --> Oracle: a word or utterance from God; --> Jacob and Esau: twin brothers (representing two people groups) [Israel: Jacob’s Descendants; Edom: Esau’s Descendants]; --> Disputation #1: God’s elective love is questioned but will be vindicated. (God’s people see that they are worse off than the Edomites who are not believers, and so they question God’s love for them amidst their current trials. But God will judge the Edomites, and then His people will see His greatness and will better understand His love for them). KNOWING THE LORD. 1) The LORD Loves His People vs1-3; 2) The LORD of Hosts Reigns as Judge vs3-4; 3) The LORD will Reveal His Greatness v5; EXPERIENCING GOD’S LOVE. 1) By Knowing Jesus Christ: --> Personally thru the Holy Spirit; --> Theologically thru God’s Word; --> Corporately thru the Church. 2) By Trusting and Obeying Him & His Plan: --> as God Disciplines us in Love; --> as God Reigns over our World; --> as we Await the Coming Kingdom.

GODLY CONFIDENCE IN DAILY LIFE THRU THE GOSPEL (2Co 4:1-18) 06-28-09
INTRODUCTION: Today’s Topic: Confidence. Today’s Passage in Context (2 Corinthians 4:1-18): --> the Central Theme of 2 Corinthians: * “The central theme of 2 Corinthians is the relationship between suffering and the power of the Spirit in Paul's apostolic life, ministry, and message . . . Paul's opponents had argued that Paul suffered too much to be a Spirit-filled apostle of the risen Christ. Paul argues that his weakness as an apostle is the very means by which believers are comforted (1:3–11) and God in Christ is made known in the world (2:14–17; 4:7–12; 6:3–10; 11:23b–33). Paul's sufferings embody the cross of Christ, while his endurance amid adversity, with thanksgiving and contentment, manifests the resurrection power of the Spirit (12:7–10). Paul's suffering as an apostle is thus the very means God uses to reveal his glory (1:3–4, 11, 20; 4:15; 9:11–15; 10:17–18).” *ESV Study Bible, Crossway Bibles, © 2007. --> the New Covenant: a new creation is coming thru God’s power. CONFIDENCE, TRUTH, AND THE GOSPEL -->(vs1-6) We have an Unshakeable Confidence based on God’s Truth in the Gospel. --> Therefore, we do not lose heart (though our Gospel is Rejected, God’s Truth prevails Victoriously). WHAT IS THE GOSPEL? (1 Corinthians 15:1-11) 06-07-09 [Note: the first few minutes of this Sermon did not get recorded]
NOTE: the first few minutes of this sermon did not get recorded. Read the "Introduction" below and the Scripture passage (1 Corinthians 15:1-11) before listening to this message. INTRODUCTION: --> Today’s Topic: Theology/the gospel. --> Background to “the gospel” (“good news”): In the Old Testament [see Isaiah 40:9; 52:7-10; 60:6; 61:1]; In the Roman World [the good news (proclaimed) related to the Emperor (i.e. his birth, accomplishments, military victories, etc.)]; **In the New Testament [“the gospel of God” (Ro 1:1; 1Th 2:2,9), “the gospel about Jesus Christ” (Mk 1:1; Ro 15:19); “the gospel of God’s grace” (Ac 20:24); “the gospel of peace” (Eph 6:15); “the gospel of your salvation” (Eph 1:13); and “the gospel of the glory of Christ” (2 Co 4:4).” **Taken from the New International Dictionary of the Bible]; --> A Definition of the Gospel [“… the embracing category that holds much of the Bible together, and takes Christians from lostness & alienation from God all the way through conversion & discipleship to the consummation, to resurrection bodies, and to the new heaven & the new earth.”—D.A. Carson]. {The Outline below was adapted from John Stott & D.A. Carson}. THE GOSPEL is Christ-Centered & Theological: therefore Live & Preach a Christ-Centered Faith. THE GOSPEL is Biblical & Apostolic: therefore Think Biblically about the Gospel (see Acts 7:1ff; 13:13ff; Galatians 3:1ff); and Heed the Preaching of the Gospel. THE GOSPEL is Universal & Personal: therefore Believe God’s Life-changing Truth and Power. THE GOSPEL is Historical & Eschatological (Eschatological refers to the 2nd Coming of Christ, the overthrow/end of evil, and the ushering in of Christ’s kingdom): therefore Persevere in the Gospel by Faith.
ENGAGING THE CULTURE AND PREACHING THE CROSS (Daniel 1:1-21) 05-31-09
INTRODUCTION: --> Today’s Topic: Culture/Education. --> A Review from Last Sunday (Daniel 1:1-16): Knowing & Trusting Our Sovereign God; Living an Uncompromising Faith. ENGAGING THE CULTURE: --> wherever God has Positioned Us; --> with an Education; --> thru Dependence on God’s Spirit; --> as Servants of Christ to the World; --> with a Kingdom-Driven Focus. PREACHING THE CROSS: --> as a Remnant in this World (Called to Faithfulness & Suffering); --> to Our Modern Day Culture (with the Love & Truth of Christ); --> with Confidence in the Gospel (as the Power of God Works thru Us).
OUR SOVEREIGN GOD, OUR MODERN DAY CULTURE, AND LIVING AN UNCOMPROMISING FAITH (Daniel 1:1-16) 05-24-09
INTRODUCTION: Today’s Topic - Culture (including our postmodern culture). [See expanded introduction below]. Today’s Passage in Context --> Introduction to the Book of Daniel: God’s people (Judah) were taken into captivity by Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, for seventy years (605 to 536 B.C.), as foretold by the prophet Jeremiah (Jer 25:12), and as a result of their sin against God. One of those captives was a young man named Daniel, who was immersed in the pagan/Babylonian culture, and who faithfully, humbly, and boldly served the Lord as one of the wisemen (and a prophet) to the kings during this time. He probably wrote/finished this book shortly after the Persians conquered the Babylonians (539 B.C.). --> Some Major Themes in Daniel: God’s sovereignty over His people & the nations; His kingdom prevails over man’s; faithful living is possible in a sinful/idolatrous world; God humbles the proud & exalts the humble; God’s people suffer according to His purposes until the End, and are called to faithfulness & patience; the spiritual realm and prayer; and the coming global/eternal reign of God’s kingdom thru the “Son of Man”. [*Adapted from Daniel by Tremper Longman III, © 1999 (NIVAC), the ESV Study Bible, and Interpreting the Prophetic Word by VanGemeren, © 1990]. KNOWING & TRUSTING OUR SOVEREIGN GOD --> who Reigns thru Salvation History and over the Nations; --> who Reigns thru the Faith & Suffering of His Servants; --> who Reigns in Our Modern Day Culture. LIVING AN UNCOMPROMISING FAITH --> with Daniel’s Life in Mind; --> with an Unswerving Obedience and an Unshakeable Confidence; --> in Light of our Coming Glory with Jesus Christ. EXPANDED INTRODUCTION: *Today’s Topic: Culture (including our “postmodern” culture) --> The Enlightenment: (17th & 18th centuries) a rejection of external authority (like the Bible) & a reliance on human reason to understand life/the world. --> Modernity: (19th & 20th centuries) thru the exercise of reason alone, we are capable of attaining knowledge, leading to a utopian (or ideal) world. --> Postmodernism: (late 20th century) a rejection of Modernity and the Enlightenment. Human progress is a lie; absolute truth is unattainable or beyond fallible-human’s ability to know. Post-moderns embrace pluralism and value the diversity of worldviews & religions. They place value in stories & experience, and look for truth & justice thru relational & holistic contexts. EMBRACING the Biblical Call to Work and HEEDING the Proverbs of Godly Stewardship (2 Thessalonians 3:6-15) 05-17-09
INTRODUCTION: Today’s Topic: Work. Today’s Passage in Context: (adapted from the ESV Study Bible): --> Some Major Themes in 2 Thessalonians: [God’s righteous judgment will be manifest at the coming of Jesus Christ (condemnation for unbelievers; salvation for believers); Christians will share in Christ’s glory; the lawless one’s identity revealed and humanity’s rebellion will both precede the 2nd Coming of Christ; the lawless one will deceive those who reject the gospel; Believers should not exploit the charity of other believers]. --> The Problem of Idlers in 2 Thessalonians 3: [Some within the church were exploiting the generosity of wealthier believers and living unproductive lives (which may or may not have been related to their belief that Christ’s return was imminent). These people were not earning their own living and were a drain on the resources and energy of hard working believers]. EMBRACING THE BIBLICAL CALL TO WORK: --> Understand its Biblical Purpose (Ge 2:15; 3:17ff; Ex 20:8-11; Ru 2:4-13; 2Ch 2:1-10; Ac 20:33-35; Col 3:22-4:1; 1Ti 5:4,8; Rev 7:9ff); --> Avoid those Walking in Idleness (v6); --> Follow Godly Examples (vs7-9); Earn your own Living (vs10-12); --> Persevere in Doing Good (v13); --> Exercise Church Discipline (vs14-15). HEEDING THE PROVERBS OF GODLY STEWARDSHIP: --> Seek Wisdom over Wealth (Pv 3:13ff; 23:23; 24:23); --> Work Hard & Justly (Pv 6:10f; 11:1; 12:10f; 28:8; 29:21); --> Give Generously to God & Others (Pv 3:9f, 27; 11:24; 14:31; 23:6; 28:25-27); --> Provide for Your Family (Pv 27:23-27; 31:1ff); --> Train Your Children (Pv 1:8-9; 22:6); --> Save Money as You are able (Pv 6:6; 13:11); --> Live a Disciplined & Prudent Life (Pv 1:1-3).
LIVING BY FAITH: for the Lord and thru Overwhelming Trials (1 Kings 17:1-24) 05-10-09
INTRODUCTION: Today’s Topic: Faith. Today’s Passage in Context (adapted from the ESV Study Bible): --> Some Themes found in 1 Kings [the LORD “Yahweh” is the only true God, the only One worthy to be worshipped, Who judges those who worship false gods, and Who is also just, gracious, and faithful to His promises]; --> Some Highlights of 1 Kings 17-22 [God is working miracles thru the prophet Elijah (including a drought, supernatural provisions for daily life, raising the dead, and answering by fire) to show all Israel that the false gods of Baal (and all other false gods) are not true gods. Only the LORD, the God of Israel, is God, He alone has power over life & death, and He will judge the house of the evil King Ahab for his wickedness (yet God is still merciful and deals graciously with Ahab after he humbles himself)]. LIVING BY FAITH FOR THE LORD: --> Thru Revelation: with a God-Centered Perspective & Purpose (v1); --> Thru Obedience: to God’s Word & His Call on Our Lives (vs2-5, 10); --> Thru Trust: in God’s Provisions (of Supernatural & Ordinary means) (vs6-10). LIVING BY FAITH THRU OVERWHELMING TRIALS: --> When all Hope is Gone (vs8-12); In Spite of our Fears (v13); --> By Giving our All to Jesus vs13-15; --> By Experiencing God thru Obedience (vs15-16); --> By Persevering unto Maturity (vs17-24).

Respond! Appreciate! Reciprocate! (2Co 6:1-13) 10-19-08
Some frustration is not only Biblical, it is a sign of health and maturity. Some things should produce a deep, godly discontentment in us, not a pseudo-spiritual complacency. To see people take God's good gifts and do nothing with it should stir us to stir others to repent, respond and even reciprocate. Paul reminds these believers what he went through so they could learn of Jesus. He has not held back and wishes for them to not hold back in their response to God and him.
